Tasawwuf: When Ihsan Paves the Way for Ethics

Tasawwuf, or Islamic mysticism, is the science of the inner dimensions of Islamic practice. While fiqh governs the outward actions of the believer and aqidah establishes the correct doctrines of faith, tasawwuf addresses the inward life of the heart. Its goal is the cultivation of ihsan — a word that the Prophet ﷺ himself defined as: "To worship Allah as though you see Him; for even if you do not see Him, He sees you."

Ihsan: The Third Dimension of Islam

When the angel Jibril (AS) came to the Prophet ﷺ and his companions in human form and asked about Islam, Iman, and Ihsan, this famous hadith (known as Hadith Jibril) outlined the three foundational dimensions of the Islamic way of life:

  1. Islam — Outward submission: the five pillars
  2. Iman — Faith: belief in Allah, His angels, books, messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree
  3. Ihsan — Excellence: the constant awareness of Allah's presence

Tasawwuf is the science of achieving Ihsan. It provides a systematic method — through the company of a shaykh, the practice of dhikr, and the purification of character — for a believer to move from outward compliance to genuine inner transformation.

Tasawwuf is character. Whoever surpasses you in character surpasses you in tasawwuf. — Imam Malik ibn Anas (R)

The ethical fruits of genuine tasawwuf are its most visible sign: truthfulness, generosity, patience, gratitude, mercy toward creation, and above all a profound love for the Prophet ﷺ. Where Ihsan is present, ethics cease to be mere rules and become the natural expression of a transformed character.

If one intends Allah subhanwutala to conceal your faults, then conceal the secrets of the people. Allah Subhanahu Taala is the best of concealers and likes the one who hides from slaves.
